Positive relationships between our staff and young people are at the heart of what we do here at Balnacraig.  All our staff work together to create a nurturing learning environment where young people are very much at the centre.

Our small class sizes (maximum of 6 pupils) mean that pupils receive the support they need to ensure that they are engaged and progressing in their learning.  We adopt a flexible, individualised approach with each learner, and our Support for Learning Assistants work closely with teaching staff to respond to the individual additional support needs of young people.

Lessons are well structured, using a variety of approaches, including active learning experiences, to keep learners engaged and motivated, and expectations are high with learning related to the real world wherever possible.

Personal support is provided by key teachers and keyworkers who support young people in monitoring their progress towards targets in Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and Care Plans.  We have daily Tutor Time first thing in the morning when teachers work with small groups of young people to reflect on learning and look ahead at future plans for the day or beyond.  Each young person is also supported to develop a profile of their achievements.
